Adult Gouldians

We have Gouldians of all three face colours: Black, Red and Yellow. In keeping with good breeding practices and in an attempt to preserve at least a small part of the Gouldian gene pool for the future, we only pair up and breed same face colour birds. This is to maintain clean and pure colours. We do however breed normal gouldians (green bodied) with various other body colour mutations, including white-breasted and yellow-bodied (of the same face colour) to increase strength into these mutations, from time to time, as needed.
However our goals are to breed both pure normal Gouldian strains as well as some mutations. That is why we keep many birds (of many genetic lines) and seperate them as required. We do not want to lose this beautiful bird to who-knows-what gene mixes and the many different body colours that do exist. We keep very detailed breeding records and cross-check all pairings to determine what colours came from what parents. This takes much time but allows us to determine, with much success, the genetic make up of our birds.
We enjoy the various body colours that we have and don't think it is 'wrong' to breed mutations. As long as we continue our efforts with the normal Gouldian we believe we are being responsible aviculturists. On average we have 40 - 50 (or more...) Gouldians in our aviaries.
