Our Aviaries

We have a total of seven aviaries. All our aviaries are of a medium size (3-5 metres long) only due to the limited size of our backyard! They provide good protection from the cold winter storms, with double roofs and (some) insulated walls to prevent frosts and winds getting through. They are wired with rodent proof 1/4 inch (6mm) mesh, where required. Some aviaries are planted with native grasses (Poa.) and other small bushes and plants. The Gouldians love to forage amongst the plants, and generally scavenge around the sandy floors. They are quite active most of the day and can really get some speed up when flying in the larger flight aviary. They are a joy to watch when allowed to fly freely. They also have a quite distinctive flying style, which includes some acrobatic loops at times!

1. This aviary is situated where it receives full summer and winter sunlight. It is 4.5m long by 2m deep and 2.5m high. It has an enclosed end, which is accessed via an internal door and is heated using a roof mounted electric radiant panel heater and a wall mounted heating cord. It maintains a temperature of around 15-20 degrees in the winter. (You can click this image to see some photos taken during its construction)

2. The enclosed end usually houses a single pair during the breeding season. They have up to four (4) nest boxes to choose from. Here you can see the heating cord on the west wall.

The same aviary as on the left, inside the enclosed end.

3. This aviary has had a new flight extension added. The extension alone is 4m deep, 2m high and 6m wide. This is where the birds spend the winter with plenty of room to stretch their wings. We cover the whole aviary with clear plastic to create a warm greenhouse effect.

4. This image shows two aviaries, with access to both at the centre via a safety door entrance. The black aviary in this image is the aviary, which was extended and is seen in the image at left.

5. This aviary is well protected for breeding during the Summer. It recieves little sun in the winter so is not used for finches half of the year. It is sometimes used to hold Bourkes parrots.

Another breeding aviary
6. These are older aviaries that are used to house breeding pairs as well as some Budgerigars. These aviaries are in need of some extending also. They are 3m deep, 1m wide and 2m high.
