Gouldian Status In The Wild

The Gouldian Finch is currently listed as 'Endangered' by the Northern Territory Parks and Wildlife Commission. It has been in steady decline for many years and is need of help from both government agencies as well as private landowners. This is necessary if the continued survival of the species is to be maintained.

The links below are intended to give insight into the range and habitat requirements of the Gouldian. As background information we hope to aid in the urgent need for policy changes with regard to responsible government departments and help environmental lobby groups in their efforts. There are current projects underway that can and do use volunteers from time to time, so if you're interested get in touch with relevant groups/departments and voice your interest and concerns.

This next passage is included to show what sort of things can happen to sensitive habitats with the never ending creep of human development. This should help people become aware of the many types of projects underway in such places and the possible consequences if they go wrong. It is an indicative example that can be used as a valuable lesson in how projects need to be managed correctly with the strictest supervision. This is not meant to be a 'bashing' exercise or an attempt to punish this particular company - thats for the authorities to deal with - but rather a learning one.

An accident during the construction of the railway link between Alice Springs and Darwin, in the Northern territory, may have damaged some feeding grounds of the Gouldian finch. An initial statement, dated July 23 2002, was issued by the company building the railway (Adrail) after this incident and this can be read HERE. In response an interview, on the 'ABC Central Australia' radio network (from July 25th, 2002), about the incident HERE took place. After some apparent misrepresentation Adrail again issued a statement explaining the actual details of the event and the process taken to rectify any problems associated with it. This can be read HERE.

Food for thought.
